Unreal and Unity PS5 on screen keyboard pauses the UI

09 Dec 2021, 23:45

Hello,

We're seeing odd behavior but only through Unreal and Unity on PS5: when onscreen keyboard is open renderer/game seems to be paused completely. When user exits the keyboard the game resumes but animating/video elements catchup at faster rate.

I'm wondering what do you think it might be and where I could even start looking at this?
Does not happen on native app on any platform. I wonder if it could be Unreal or Unity specifically, but both having this behavior is odd. I'm not sure how to verify if it's unreal/unity doing something or not yet.

Thank you.
Cheers.

This is really strange, we need to investigate. Please open a ticket about it. Thank you!

Update: it's happening in native as well. (we just don't have animated visuals in native so never noticed).

SceDisplay::EnterMessageLoop doesn't get hit while OS keyboard is up.

Strangely enough SceDisplay::OpenSoftwareKeyboard does not get triggered .. so means Sony OS keyboard is not a software keyboard? (or I didn't link something correctly).

SceDisplay::OpenSoftwareKeyboard is the only way to open the keyboard, so it has to be triggered or do you mean that the keyboard is not showing?

Besides, we check the Ime result in the main render loop, and return to render if the result is not yet ready. So I would say, we keep rendering but I need to verify.

Found it! Entirely our fault, found a while(sceImeDialogGetStatus() != SCE_IME_DIALOG_STATUS_FINISHED){ continue; }
