Runtime structures

07 Apr 2025, 19:58

Hi,
I keep experimenting with the tool and it is a blast! So many things works exactly as I expected and wanted them to do! The way a data property of type ImageSource takes a folder and picks an image from their randomly is great!

However, I read in the doc about runtime data, and I see a filter in the data tab about "Runtime structures", and when I ask ChatGPT about it it starts hallucinating about me calling Noesis.GUI.SetDevelopmentMode(true); in my C# engine to get it to hook up, but my version of the the C# libs has no such method.

I guess this is something that is not in public beta yet? Is there something I can do to try it out? As it is it feels like I am doing a lot of duplicated work creating design view models that match my real view models and worse, keeping them in sync as I iterate.

I guess maybe I am being a bit too eager to use this beta in my day to day work. :)

Hello,

It looks like ChatGPT may be hallucinating a bit in this case. 😊

One of the extensibility features of Noesis Studio is the ability to provide data types from the runtime that can be utilized directly within the Studio environment. This allows designers to work with class definitions that already exist in the game code. Currently, this functionality is only available when building Noesis from source, but it will be fully supported soon when Studio is integrated into both Unity and Unreal Engine.

Once this integration is in place, your C# classes, specifically those tagged with the StudioData metadata, will automatically appear in the Data panel of Noesis Studio. These classes are labeled as “Runtime” to distinguish them from design-time data.

Alternatively, it’s also possible to retrieve data definitions directly from Studio. These definitions are available as XML files in the .noesis/data folder, and can be converted into C# classes using a custom script. While this approach is still experimental, we already have clients using it successfully. In the future, we plan to provide official scripts to facilitate the conversion of design-time data into various formats, including C++, C#, Blueprints, and Lua.

Please, let me know if you need more information.

Hey jsantos,

What is the situation in Noesis 4.0? Is there a way to make a custom-built Studio see native types and create data sets for them?
If no, what is the preferred workflow? I assume to generate structure xmls?

Thanks

Only native enums are visible in the Data panel for now. We didn't have time to implement support for anything else.

For now, you need to manually create the XMLs from your C# classes. Multiple clients are currently following this approach.
