Summary0004349: Missing Ability to Organise Timeline Layers Into Groups
Description

Reporting from User Feedback where the user expressed the inability to 'clean up' an animation timeline by being able to group Elements featured within the Timeline into unlimited amount of groups and subgroups.

As a conversation starter, in practice, I would imagine it would work somewhat similarly to the following:

  • Timeline Groups are metadata-only in nature, and exist only in Studio.
  • Timeline Groups can be manually re-arranged up/down within the Timeline.
  • Timeline Groups don't appear within the Navigator.
  • Timeline Groups can be created by selecting multiple Elements in the Timeline, and pressing a new icon within the Timeline action buttons, which when no Group is present/selected, is a 'Group' button action. This toggles to an 'Ungroup' icon when a Group is selected.
  • Timeline Groups can be renamed by double clicking on their default name, exactly as done with Elements.
  • Timeline Groups can be dragged-and-dropped and Grouped into/out of other Timeline Groups, creating a hierarchy of Timeline Groups.

The reason for not using Ctrl+G and multi-selection+context menu shortcuts is that this would risk creating conflicts with the fact that selecting Element(s) in the Timeline also selects them in the Navigator, where Ctrl+G and Context Menu shortcuts are already reserved for Layout actions.

NB: This entire proposal should likely not be actioned until the items from https://www.noesisengine.com/bugs/view.php?id=4250 are resolved, and which include:
1) Simplifying the Timeline
2) Allowing the re-arranging of individual Elements up/down within the Timeline
